What I loved about the Constantine tv show was that Constantine was the kind of guy who’s pretty good at pretending to be a cold asshole but he just cares so much.
And now I’m reading Hellblazer, he’s also made out to be this cold uncaring guy (hell he feeds his friend to a demon and watches him die) but he’s the kind of character who cares so much and the comics are the most political thing I’ve read in a while. There’s one where he’s basically a witness to the horrors of the Viet Nam war, and PTSD. There's talk of AIDS. There’s one about rich people being actually demons (and thatcherites), there’s a bunch of things about child rapists and christian cults, and neo-Nazis trying to beat up gay people who end up (b)eaten by a demon… It might be a bit dated in some aspects, but Hellblazer is a comic with a purpose and that’s something I don't see enough of.
