3.5 stars. This sci-fi/fantasy mash-up worked slightly better than you’d expect; the plot was interesting. The prose, unfortunately, was simplistic and utilitarian. The magic system was poorly explained.

The protagonist in this book is really flat. Whether he's talking about emotional experiences or the ins and outs of his technical job, he presents the same flat, analytical affect with wooden, overly formal dialogue. At first I thought it might be a specific character choice (maybe he's just one of those people that doesn't exhibit a lot of emotion and has trouble socially relating to others), but as I kept reading I realized ALL the characters are like this. They could be having a conversation about an impending life-threatening invasion as casually as if they were talking about supply-chain logistics. The detail and description didn't have any immediacy to it, everything was described from a very detached, objective point of view even when, presumably, you'd want your reader to feel the same fear, excitement, anger, anxiety, etc. that the characters are feeling. The no-nonsense, overly formal tone of the writing was a very odd juxtaposition with the subject matter (space fantasy with wizards and spells and such).

Excellent, straightforward sci-fi/fantasy mixture. The hero is a hero and he stays a hero. No messing around and no political BS. The mix between Sci-Fi technology and fantasy (magic) is quite entertaining. Sure, the story is maybe a bit for the younger audience but I find it quite entertaining despite being 48 years old. After all, I do read book to escape reality :-)

well, gotta be honest, this book wasn't exactly my cup of tea. the author has this habit of telling rather than showing, which is one of my biggest pet peeves in writing. i get that in sci-fi, there might be some need for explanations, but they all followed the same pattern and ended up feeling kind of silly. surprisingly though, it didn't bother me as much as it usually does.

i'm not really into fantasy themes, especially when mixed with sci-fi. but you know what? i've got this itch to explore anything that comes my way, just for the fun of it. admittedly, i didn't pay full attention to the book when it came to certain descriptions/typical fantasy moments, so I can't give it a full glowing review. but, to be fair, it was decently entertaining and helped pass the time, although the characteres were a bit too one-dimensional and side characters weren't enough explored, which was a letdown, as well. it's not a masterpiece, not one of those mind-blowingly amazing books, and that's okay. books don't always have to aim for that. sometimes, being tolerable is enough, and that's what this book is.

random note: i think if this was a comic book, i might have been a bit more forgiving and generous with my rating. i could totally imagine joel stumbling upon it, giving it to ellie, and her actually loving it btw hehe

It was okay.

I did find the characters one dimensional, without any feelings expressed outside of the main protagonist Vydor. It would have been nice to have had the feelings or views of the other characters explored; it really all revolved around Vydor and the unwavering loyalty and trust to him.

That being said, the story progressed well, there were no parts that dragged on. I liked the Dragon Claw fleet and would have loved if it had been explored more. I'm also curious about the book in Vydor's possession - we never got resolution on that.

this one I won it but it left me satisfied, it's really a great tale, it has romance, power war, likable characters. I do want more of this tale, Vydor was an interesting protagonist and the unlikely hero in this story I really liked that and the power struggles he overcome with all his friends absolutely on point. the plot had a good pace and it keep getting better every second I heard.

i'm hoping to get more of trigili's tales he is a master storyteller.

This book surprised me. I was in the mood for a good sci-fi space adventure, and I got one, but it also sneaked in some fantasy which I was not expecting. And it snuck it in very skillfully so it kept me completely engaged. I will definitely keep reading the series.
