Okay, this was a fun blast from the past! I remember now why I used to love reading these books, although I didn't remember much about this at all! This came out when I was in elementary school, so we basically grew up with the Beverly Cleary books! We lived a few blocks from the library and spent much of our summer days there because it had air conditioning, and Chicago in the summer is ridiculously hot and humid. So we would spend all day reading series, and this was definitely one of our faves. It's interesting revisiting this as an adult and although some of it is dated, it has mostly aged well. I'm thinking that I might have to revisit the entire series this coming year. It's definitely an entertaining read when you're looking for something lighthearted and fun. Stockard Channing is also the perfect reader for these books.

So many vivid memories from this one.

Nostalgic and timeless.

Ramona Quimby is special for me because her series were one of the first "big" no picture books that I read in English. I loved them all and I remember going to the library to load up on this and later Judy Blumes'.

My mom permed my hair in Kindergarten/1st grade. She'd style it like Nellie in Little House in the Prairie but what I thought of my hair was like that girl, of one Ramona's classmate, that had boing boing curls :P

This was a fun read. Little girl loved that Ramona always signed her name "Ramona Quimby, Age 8". We had good talks about making good choices, expressing yourself, and expressing your feelings.

These books are such a comfort to read as an adult (and a parent). Beverly Cleary is so sensitive to the feelings and desires and worries and joys of not just Ramona, but the whole Quimby family. The parents are stressed about bills but doing their best to improve their situation and do what's best for their kids. Everyone gets cranky, and worried, and they get through it together as a family (eventually). Ramona finds joy in lots of childhood experiences, and as she's getting older she is working out her place in the family and feeling responsibility and also learning to work her problems out for herself.

On top of all that, this book has Yard Ape. :D
