these novels are in part about decolonization from the perspective of the colonizer (a war-focused hierarchical society). i’m still sitting with that. in book four of a series with 1,000+ pages per book we finally get some dedicated character development for the original inhabitants of the planet. sanderson’s world building and thinking about magic and power and violence are all interesting, and the books are good for something distant to immerse one’s self in for a long time if that is what one needs. i also find them dull at times and soooo much time is spent on the mindsets (and deconstruction of the ideology) of the ruling class—it’s good to show a bad world breaking down but sometimes I just don’t want to spend so much time immersed in the bad world. lots of discussion of mental illness/mental health including dissociative disorders, ptsd, depression, but I thought all of that was handled pretty well. good stuff on relationship/coalition building across difference and recognizing/accepting failure and trying again anyway.
