I didn't think I was going to like a book about revolutionary terrorism in colonial India, but I was wrong. Ghosh weaves a lesson in the competing uses of history in with examinations of the motives and uses of violent resistance in Bengal, presenting a history of the fight for independence that is inconvenient for those who wish to maintain that the nation-state was founded through non-violence. Really deep, and really deft, and a frightening link to the security laws of the current age.
