I'm really having trouble with this series. There are parts that I really, really like. The political intrigue, the world at large, and some of the non-romantic character interactions are genuinely very interesting. However, I find the pacing absolutely bizarre. Maybe it's personal preference, but having every book start with huge time jumps and overlapping events from the previous entries, makes it unnecessarily confusing at times. Especially since we follow different characters in every book. I think I would have preferred a larger cast starting in book one, and a more linear story for the series as a whole.
I am also annoyed with the ages of the main characters. Yes, I'm aware this is YA; however, I really enjoyed the Seven Realms series, because it was teens fulfilling TEEN ROLES in saving the kingdoms. The adults were annoying at times, but they were still doing their jobs and were definitely 'in charge' for the most part. This series has young teens fulfilling ADULT roles, and it really pulls me out of the story. Captain of the military at 15? Owner of a large shipping fleet at 16? Intelligence gatherer for multiple kingdoms at 16? No, I don't buy it. Also, the adults are pretty much useless.
I really wanted to love this. At least they are super fast reads.

So good and of course I must wait for a year until the next book is released.
1/3 of the way threw and WOW. And then it got interesting. What fun.
Great addition! This brings together a lot of the story lines from the first two books and rapidly moves forward, seemingly to an impending showdown. Awesome twist too!

I carried this book around for three weeks before I actually opened it, and I don't exactly know why. Williams Chima has never disappointed me when it comes to her storytelling, and this was no exception. I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to see how this series finishes since I loved the first one, and this second one hasn't disappointed. Likewise, Williams Chima has made me like characters, like Destin, that I never thought I would have liked in the first book. And I cannot wait to see how it all works out for Lila, who has been behind the scenes this whole time, pulling the strings.
The cameo, such as it was, by Han in this book made me miss him all over again. Of all the literally characters whose deaths have affected me, his has to be top 5 for sure, which speaks to Williams Chima's phenomenal characterization and storytelling ability.
In short, this was fantastic, and I'm sure the final book in the series will be a rollercoaster ride from start to finish.
