2022 Review:
5 stars again...I wish there were more to give it or more to say about it. This time, I did a 2-hour review of this on my podcast www.storiedarcs.com that will release in mid-October 2022.

2019 Review:
Perfection. It is simple, yet brilliant. Artistically it is beautiful in it'd simplicity. Narratively unadorned and emotionally powerful. This is perhaps the most profound work I've ever read in this genre.

Haunting and beautiful, this book was worth reading twice. Lemire's art does not excite me on its own merits, but it always fits the stories. The wonderful story of a reluctant, confused father-to-be pairs with the frail, imperfect lines of Lemire. I love everything Lemire has done so far, but what he always seems do to best is the core concept of fatherhood in all his work.

It was refreshing to read a graphic novel that has actually been made by someone who intimately understands graphic storytelling. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, especially since Lemire uses pretty standard rectangular layouts through the novel, but he, at least in my opinion, succeeds beautifully at conveying emotion and story with minimal text. The Underwater Welder is also the first graphic novel that I have read in a while that very successfully uses size, shape and placement of conversation and text bubbles to convey volume, intonation and social dynamics.

Although underwater welder seems like an odd profession for a main character to have, it doesn't feel forced to me. In this graphic novel, Lemire conveys both the soothing solitude and the sharp loneliness of being deep in the ocean, as well as deep in one's own psyche. Although there isn't much "story" or "action," and the book ends a bit neatly, I still found The Underwater Welder to be a meaningful reading experience about a man finally beginning to come to terms with his father's death and start to live in the present and visualize the future.

Very of a piece with Essex County. Different enough to hold my interest here, but I could see the ending coming far off in the distance and I think the multigenerational melancholy was done better there.

Jack works as an underwater welder on an offshore oil rig. He leaves his wife at home for one last shift before he birth of their first child. Something strange happens to Jack under the sea and he becomes preoccupied remembering the death of his own dad when he was a boy. An emotional graphic novel of fathers and sons and of birth and death.

This book was fine and the cover of book was stunning but it was bit dull and I have mix feeling about art work.

The ending was okay but I didn't like the characters.
