Feel good ending

Great story about survival and perseverance. Gave great insight of the times and struggles in the Caribbean in those days.

This book was outside of the normal genres I read but the summary caught my attention and I knew I had to read it. I am so glad I did. Rachel’s journey is heartwarming. Though not every ending for her children was a happy one, she got closure across the board and I’m glad I was able to go through that journey with her. I cried with her, I felt her pain. The author did an incredible job putting the reader in Rachel’s mindset.

3.5 stars. The story of a freed slave going to search for her children who were taken and sold, is gut-wrenching. It is even more painful when you know the premise is based on truth. It is written in simple, “accented” English, which the author explains was based on her desire to make it mirror the immediacy found in some Creole dialects and not possible otherwise. I thought that was clever and could have worked really well, if it hadn’t also been (imho) heavy handed - almost tedious. 300+ pages is a long time to be mired in constant, repeated descriptions of wordless communication between characters as well as Rachel’s inner thoughts. I wish there had been better editing…..

18/05/23: I just realized that I did not like this book as much as I thought I did. So I am changing my rating from 3 stars to 2.75.

I struggled to get into this book. I couldn't wrap my head around the idea of this woman, running away from her plantation to go look for her children. In some ways, things seemed too easy, too convenient sometimes.
I was thinking, she won't be able to find all of them, will she? So, I was curious about how her journey would turn out. I will say that I rolled my eyes a couple of times because, again, things were just too convenient.
My heart ached for Mary Grace. How traumatized she was that she stopped talking. My heart really ached for Micah, his hope and how it led to his death. My heart ached for Rachel when she found Thomas Augustus and Cherry Jane and she had to be brave to leave them again. To accept the lives, they had to create for themselves, so they could feel safe.  My heart ache for Mercy and I almost cried when Rachel learned what had happened to her. My heart ached for Nuno and for Nobody.
At the end, it was as if all the emotions came crushing down. I came down from feeling nervous and scared for the characters, to feel the relief, the joy. They survived. They survived but I wanted to know what would happen next. But the book ended, and I guess, I can just imagine and hope that they found their freedom.
