So much information that’s so rarely talked about - an extremely important and unacknowledged history. Pretty abrupt ending

2.5 stars rounded up.

Pros: tons of great research. Myriad references and so many new perspectives. A true reflection of a love and passion for rectifying the historical narrative from an indigenous lens.

Cons: this book is unreadable. It feels as if the author gathered facts and interesting connections for 500 pages, dropped the stack, hurriedly shoved them in his brief case and then the book was published that way.

I know, it won awards. But truly were the award committees off their Ritalin so this worked for them?

This book is a must read for anyone wanting a fuller understanding of U.S. history. The story we learned in school as kids centered on one group of people (the white ones) and left out the folks who were already on this land before Europeans arrived. This book goes a long way in helping to reshape our understanding of how these groups of people interacted over the years since those initial encounters.

Thank you to Yale University Press and NetGalley for the digital ARC. I already bought my own hard copy!

An incredibly important read. I learned so much and want to keep learning. It’s a lot of information and jumped around a bit so on audio it was hard to follow at times. Going to borrow a physical copy from the library so I can go back and read through specific time periods.
