I’m a little disappointed, I felt like the first part of the book with Lilly was really scary and engaging, but the rest of the book fell flat.
The whole “boys will be boys” ideology was exhausting and just outright outdated. The graphic scenes and the characters thought process behind them were questionable.

The Prologue was the best part of the book! It was fast paced, haunting and hinted @ possible otherworldly beings. I was immediately sucked in and I just knew I was going to devour this book in a day or 2.
Unfortunately that's where my interest ended. The writing style of the remainder of book turned me off. The way Grace speaks is very odd and immediately sets the tone that something sinister is going on w/ her, and it plays out as the book goes on. However it becomes very predictable, repetitive, and droll. What you think is happening, is happening. The ending was just that, the end of a book that I could mark as completed on Goodreads
TW Conversations regarding sexual assault of two males is dismissive, and mentions the victims possibly enjoying it in an attempt to minimize it

I didn’t check the TW’s
and don’t want to read sexual assault scenes, even if they’re with demons, for entertainment
. After getting this far and looking up what’s to come, I’ve decided that this book isn’t for me.

The story was decent but it was really hard to feel the tension when I just didn't care about the characters. The characters were kind of flat and dismissive of eachother. I didn't care about Monica (the victim in the story) because when the story was told from Troy's (Monica's husband) perspective he didn't really seem like he cared about her. He only seemed to care about being right, which made it hard to care about him.

The story is kind of predictable, but that wouldn't have been a problem if the characters were more developed. We immediately got into the "tense" part of the story without learning anything about the characters. Well, we did learn two things one is that Monica struggles to parent her strong willed daughter and that Troy is a f**k boy.

In my opinion, it's predictable, it's boring, it's sexist - we see much of the action through the Male Gaze, the perspective of a chronic womanizer who lustfully perceives every woman's breasts, legs, and buttocks as objects of desire. Even with a woman he rightly sees as evil, he can't help but mention her sex appeal.

There are numerous sex scenes, many of which are part of the horror aspect of the book. Two of them are scenes where a man is forcibly tied up and forced to have sex against his will - but of course, he secretly enjoys it because the woman is sooooo incredibly attractive and kinky. This is, in my eyes, a trivialization of sexual violence, which I find distasteful even in an exaggerated campy horror novel.

I read this book for our book club challenge to read a book found because of social media. This was a recommendation from Jesse on YouTube. The beginning of this novel was so strong. Creepy, eerie vibes right of the bat. I liked the originality of this story. I do feel like it got a little over the top, toward the end of the novel, but overall it was a fun and thrilling ride.

What a ride!

In Nana we follow Monica as she's grieving the loss of her adoptive mother. At the funeral, she meets her biological mother, Grace, for the first time and thus ensues a journey that will change her life forever. Grace is assertive, confident, and persistent in taking care of her as she grieves. However, there is a darker purpose to Grace's arrival into Monica's life. Her husband is suspicious, even their dog doesn't like Grace.

There were some plot points that did take me out of the story but overall I couldn't stop reading. I read it in two sittings and I'll definitely be looking for more of Massey's books to read when I need a good horror/thriller book.
