This is a very good book the first 3 or 4 chapters are not the rest of the book and can be very off-putting but the latter half is good for any dystopian or horror fan.

Look - is this the best book ever? No. Does it have some flaws? Yes. Did I still give it 4.5 stars? Heck yea I did.

The Loop is essentially a slasher/apocalyptic book - similar to zombie stories, but not exactly zombies - and it's suuuuper gory. Teenagers in a small town are infected by... something... that makes them incredibly violent. The people that remain uninfected are left to their own devices to evade these horrifying versions of their classmates and try to find a way out of the situation.

Some aspects have a distinct YA feel, but that's mostly due to the main characters being teens. Johnson creates believable teenage characters and a flawed, but interesting main trio.

I started listening to this book on audio, but found I couldn't wait until I was back in the car to finish, so I got it in print to finish. This book has the pacing of fast zombie movies like Train to Busan or World War Z, and I couldn't put it down.

If you liked Clown in a Cornfield , you'll probably like this one too. It's quite a bit bleaker, but a similar vibe.

I probably shouldn't write a review so soon after reading this book. I'm high from emotions, but honestly, that's the motivation I need to write.

There's so much to compliment about this book. Lucy was a deeply relatable character to me during the whole journey. The feeling of being excluded because of your race, the way childhood trauma messes you up in ways no one can understand, your childhood being taken away by horrible event after horrible event, heartbreak, I could go on.

This is a rough book. It's not lighthearted at all. The jokes that keep everything from being depressingly bleak comes in the form of self-deprecating humor and dark comedy. There is body horror, mostly of humans, and psychological horror. Every page had me hoping things would get better, and time and time again I was reminded of the terrible situation the characters were put in. Don't go into this story unless you're ready for a tense, heartbreaking adventure.

And this tense, heartbreaking adventure was a fun ride to go on. I practically had my face pressed against my screen. By the end, I was nearly teary-eyed.
