Nothing wrong with it. Just not for me.

It's a solid book, but mostly unremarkable except for the Caribbean folklore. I thought it had potential, but ultimately, the pacing was too fast. I say that, understanding that this book is middle-grade, and those books tend to be shorter. However, I think the POV shifts detracted from character growth because the chapters among the characters were spread too thin.

Couldn't keep my interest. I wasn't invested in the characters or the story.

An exceptional start but the 'big bad' is never as scary once you know what it is and that was revealed too early for me.

I don't read too much middle grade so I'm not sure I have much to stack this up to... but it was very nice and a good read!

I enjoyed the mythology and culture and magic woven into this story. The first time we meet the douen will be a moment that haunts me for a while. I think that's huge for a children's novel.

A bit underwhelming sadly, I think I had too high hopes for this and I hyped it up for a long time because of the premise. But other than that it's a really nice story and the ending was great and brought the entire story up a lot. The books message can be applied to real life as well which is nice and it would be a great story for children to read/discuss.

All in all a good book and a quick read, I recommend it
