Partly an interesting, but also an excruciating read. Unfortunately the character study gets drowned in Victorian melodrama.

The previous minister Mr Tufton has retired and the dissenting Salem Chapel is looking for a new minister. This is the story of Arthur Vincent, his family, associates and the people of the Chapel.
An enjoyable re-read.

I accidentally read this first because I didn't realise it's actually the third book in Chronicles of Carlingford so was a little confused when Oliphant assumed the reader would know things (which they would if they'd read the preceding books!). This is a really engaging forgotten Victorian novel and although quite long I'd definitely recommend that people who are interested in nineteenth-century literature read it!
