Crying my eyes out. Evan is the villain, but I can’t hate him. Even after watching the Broadway musical, this book hits hard. It burns. I heavily relate to Connor. I’ve dealt and still deal with mental illness, s*lf harm and passive s*icidal ideation. It makes me feel heard knowing I am not alive. It hurts knowing Connor suffered until he couldn’t anymore. This book is important. This book educates. I’ve lived with chronic anxiety all my life and the way Evan’s anxiety is described is so accurate and well formatted. I love the raw emotion of this book, though I will admit I shed a few tears.the_chocolate_bookshelf's review against another edition

so last night i borrowed the audiobook of this from libby. im at 17% bc thats where i left off.
update on 1/31: finished listening on audiobook. simply breathtaking. here i am crying at 9pm over this. hearing this while im still technically a teen is so helpful and well hopeful. the ending made me cry when evan's mom is unexpectaly invited to dinner with the murphys and what happens after that.

Some quick thoughts:
Evan was a character that I loved to hate - right until *that* twist in the end. He's inappropriate, makes poor and harmful choices, and prioritizes his own need for comfort over others (even when his narration is insisting the opposite is true). In essence, he's a realistic teenage boy.
I got such strong secondhand embarrassment from his words and deeds, that reading this book often felt like a minor anxiety attack.
Until like the final 90% or so of the book, I genuinely thought it had been mis-shelved as LGBTQ+. The straight "romance" is excruciating thanks to a certain dramatic irony.

Moderate: Cursing and Abandonment
Minor: Antisemitism and Drug use
Child death: It's a teenager (a senior in highschool)
