Archeologist works with police detective and finds more than either of them expects where ocean meets sky. Darker than I am used to, not being able to trust anyone.

Descriptive overkill - rather than getting a sense of the scene, you get a sense of the author trying to set the scene.

The first in this series about a forensic archaeologist who helps solve crimes. I’m not sure where the series will go from here, but the main character is flawed and complex enough that I am already planning to return the next in the series.

I'm hooked. Complex characters. Great storytelling. References to literature, history, geography, mythology. A lead female character who is intelligent, accomplished, and flawed. A compelling distraction, and a perfect series to start during this time of sheltering-in-place.

My review is likely biased, because a) I've read this series out of order and b) the series has been my companion across the pandemic. Somehow, without that being my intention, I've come to the first book in this 14-book series last. And it was perfection seeing the origin story at last. Those first interactions between Ruth and Nelson. Cathbad. Eric. Lucy and Scarlett, who in their own way haunt this whole series. The beautiful descriptions of the Norfolk salt marshes.

Also, the narration on this audio edition was just spot on.

Plus a shout out to my local library systems who have meant I've read this entire 14 book series, in a mix of print and audio, for the grand total price of 99p. Aren't libraries great.
