Read This Book

This book is a fantastic start to a new series. There was enough action, intrigue, and suspense to keep me on my toes, wanting more. I loved getting a glimpse of characters from the authors previous novels, and seeing the outcome of the old characters hard work! Fingers crossed we get more glimpses in future Shade books!

DNF pg 30

This book sadly just isn’t working for me. I am not liking Shade at all really. She is a witch that has lived for hundreds of years apparently but acts like a teenager almost in need to prove herself to her mentor. She just feels very childish and I was quickly getting irritated by some of her actions and I have barely read any of the story.  While I think the concept of this world is interesting, at least from what I have read so far, I just don’t like Shade enough to continue reading to find out what will happen.

Absolutely awesome, I haven't read a Jennifer Blackstream book in a long time but after reading deadline I remember why I love her writing.
Deadline I full of twist and turn, interesting characters (new and old).
I can't wait to read more!

T;LDR: An urban fantasy mystery novel with an interesting world and a main character out of prove herself, Deadline is a light and entertaining read.

This is a new series for me in the urban fantasy/mystery genre. While I can see some potential pitfalls coming to the series based on the first book, it was an easy read for a lazy Saturday.

The world-building is scattered throughout and not heavy-handed, the mystery was interesting and there were plenty of red herrings. But the MC bounced from one encounter to another and I'm not a fan of the sidekick (personal taste). And thus, I give it 3.5 stars.

What I liked:
➕ The world is interesting. It is an urban fantasy, but the mythology and the magic has unique tweaks.
➕ There are just as many powerful female characters as males, which is nice balance.
➕ The theme of the book is also refreshing.

What I liked Less:
➖ The heroine was a bit too inept. It's the first book, so hopefully she'll get better, but...
➖ Personally, I did not like the sidekick. As that is subjective, I'll leave it there.

To Sum Up (too late!)
Overall, this is a decent mystery set in an interesting world with a lot of potential. It could go either way, but based on this book alone, I do recommend it for someone looking for another good urban fantasy mystery series. With all that in mind, I rated it 3.5 stars.

Shade is a witch who has been practicing for a very long time, and she isn't exactly sure of her past, but she knows some strange things happened. Now, she's not only trying to use her witch powers, but she is also trying to become a PI. She wants to help others, so when she gets a job by a very powerful vampire she must do what she can before it is too late.

This book was really good, and a great start to this series. I loved Shade, even though at times she lacked confidence, she still was awesome. I really can't wait to read more in this series and to learn more about her past.

Shade Renard aspires to be more than just a village witch, but she didn't expect her first job as a private investigator to be for a vampire. With high stakes, Otherworld diversity, and smooth storytelling, this book hits all the checkmarks for urban fantasy/mystery, but what makes it endearing is the vibrancy of the relationship between Shade and her pixie familiar. The parent/child dynamic is sweet and sassy and a beautiful contrast to the potential darkness of a vampire recovering stolen goods. The second career transition is also a good reminder to be true to one's purpose. I'm hooked and excited for the rest of the series.

Shade Renard is a witch at a crossroad.

She can either continue on as a traditionally village witch- helping new mothers, curing ailments, listening to woes, and protecting her small town of Dresden from beasties...or she can go against her mentors wishes and finally start up a private investigator agency she's always been wanting too.

However, Shade's first foray into helping others outside of her town creates a domino effect that drastically changes her course. She is approached by a human FBI agent to look into a possible haunted house which eventually leads her to become enmeshed with a group of very powerful beings.

We've got vampire kings, sorceresses, wizards, and fae all surrounding her and her expanding case--her first case! Can she find the answers to her current mystery in addition to the question on why these power players are so interested in her?
