4 Hearts! - Group Review with JL and Lost in a Book!

SJ Himes is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and I really can’t find much fault at all with her newest release. Markedly different from her Beacon Hills Sorcerer series, this was simply a feel good love story blending historical, magical, and fantasy elements that will surely pique many a reader’s interest.

Kind Jamie, is rescued from a cruel fate, and though he’s scared and damaged, he finds some measure of comfort in the place he’s now in, a country that is most disbelieving for its benevolence and acceptance regarding all things. Making that transition easier is Prince Maxim who takes an interest in Jamie, and soon learns to his delight that there’s more than meets the eye to the timid young man. What unfolds is a seriously sweet slow burn as Jamie and his prince get to know each other, ultimately, falling easily in love.

Low on the angst with great hurt comfort tones that goes both ways, this is surely an unbelievably perfect kingdom Jamie finds himself thriving in. Himes creates a world with many facets since not all realms are as open minded as Pyrderi. Luckily, this is just the beginning, and I for one will not be saying no to more stories from this interesting fictional world!

A plot, a plot, my kingdom for a plot.

After novice healer Jaime Buchanan’s father dies heavily in debt, he is sold into slavery for six months. Then he’s rescued and lands in the kingdom of Pyrderi, where magic and homosexuality are readily accepted. He’s taken in by the palace cook and works in the kitchen.

Then things change a year into his stay when he’s ordered to bring breakfast to Prince Maximum, the
youngest prince of the castle.

Upon seeing each other, they instantly fall in love and within days of meeting each other Prince Maximum proposes to Jaime, complete with the dying king’s blessing.

That’s the whole story. There’s no conflict, no court intrigue, no one argues or is anything but nice to each other.

Boring.

None of the characters were developed at all and there was zero chemistry between Jaime and Prince Maximum. The sex scenes had no build up, were bland, and went on for too long.

This was a decent first draft but was nowhere near finished as nothing was fleshed out.
The only good things I can say about this Audiobook are (1) it was short at 4 hours, and (2) it was free with my audible trial membership.

And when I learned this was only the first entry in a series, I rolled my eyes. I have zero desire to read more about this world and its characters and doubt I’ll try another book by this author.
I give The Solstice Prince 0 out of 5.0 stars.

Skip this boring book.

I truly enjoyed this read and was not ready to leave the land, the palace, or the characters by the end. This felt like a satisfying first chapter on something larger. Will be back for more.

Sweet

This was a sweet, super cute read. It had all the feels and sweetness and Maxim and Jaime were adorable.

Cute story, I guess. Literally felt nothing about any of the characters, whether they be main characters or side ones. If you’re gonna write a romance novel you have to sell the idea of romance between your intimate characters to your readers. For me, I just didn’t buy into their romance, it just sort of happened and wasn’t rewarding in the slightest. There was functionally no conflict in either the development of their relationship nor in the broader scope of the world.
