Such a solid, pitch-perfect novella. Is the concept original? No, but it is very well constructed and believably horrifying. A great, spooky read.

It was a bit of a slow start (the protagonist sure likes to ramble), but it's a really short read and it picked up quickly as I got closer to the middle. Very creepy, fun re-telling.

Top tier gothic horror, not for the squeamish.

If you want a short, novella that brings you into the story from the first page and immerses you so deep you'll forget to breathe, then this is for you.

Something strange is happening at the House of Usher, a mansion in disrepair where our main character (gender neutral) Alex is told his best friend is near death. When Alex arrives they their best friend frail and not acting like herself.

This book is best read in a derelict gothic mansion, one with a crypt in the basement, overlooking a nearby pond. Also there should be rabbits. Lots of rabbits.

“(Look, if you don’t make a fool of yourself over animals, at least in private, you aren’t to be trusted. That was one of my father’s maxims, and it’s never failed me yet.)”

Hob the horse is the real MVP of this story.

Super highly recomend. This was my first T.Kingfisher book and I WAS BLOWN AWAY. I am usually a fan of Edgar Allen Poe and this retelling and expansion brought it to a more amazing level. This was an amazingly written story and one I did not expect. I hope to read the next story because I am such a big fan of Alex and Angus. Such a fantastic read with realistic characters, amazing surprises, and a gothic/horror/eerie vibe that most stories don't have. Will be reading wayyyy more T. Kingfisher
