Coraline is a book that I would have loved to read as a kid. It is full of Dahl-esque quirkiness…okay, who am I kidding? I loved it even as an adult! Two of my favorite quotes:

I remember the first time I watched Jurassic Park. I was blown away by the film: the CGI was extraordinary (amazing how well it still holds up today, almost 30 years later), and I was wowed by the plot. Then I read the book and realized how awful the movie was in comparison. I was a teenager at the time, so even though I had heard the phrase "the book is always better than the movie," it wasn't until after I read the book version of Jurassic Park that I actually took that phrase seriously. I swore then that I would always read the book first.

Well, I should say, that over the past almost-30-years, I have certainly tried to do this, I haven't always been successful. Coraline is my latest "I wish I'd read the book first. The film was as straightforward as a PG-rated horror film could be, but like every other book adaptation, I wondered what kind of nuance it was missing. Now that I have actually read Coraline, I know that Neil Gaiman created another masterpiece with this novella. This book is far more than just "girl wants new parents and gets the worst ones," but manages to create a whole universe with a legitimately creepy antagonist, and our heroine needs to not only confront her fears, but also engage a twisted enemy that she legitimately
Spoileralmost loses to.

In the end, she is victorious, of course, and has learned her lesson, grown as a person, etc., but it still amazes me how Gaiman continues to create extremely believable worlds and drop us the reader headlong into them.
