this had it all. Romance, mystery, heartfelt drama. It was wonderful and sweet and I loved the characters.

Just not for me.

Was not connected to the characters. A lot of random made-up words and phrases that I believe were supposed to add humor, but just didn't work for me personally.

If you like a morally grey love interest (AKA a creepy stalker) and can get past the silly dialogue then you may like this one, but I can't say I would recommend it.

This one was a bit tough for me. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but I found it very difficult to pick up a good plotline in the story. There are so many hilariously funny quips and phrases which kept me reading, but I found that ~60% of the way through the book, I was still not sure where it was going or what it was all about. The character development was clear, just felt a bit lost for direction, and found this to be more spice than substance. The authors did a great job with all the witty repartee, and I found myself laughing out loud numerous times, especially at the introduction of a Maine Coon cat named Kevin Costner. I think this had a lot of potential to be fabulous, but unfortunately missed the mark for me. Thank you to Kerrigan Byrne, Cynthia St. Aubin, the publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this e-arc!

Like a 3.5. I'm conflicted about this one.

The beginning was confusing. I think that's because we weren't supposed to know anything, and the vague bits of information we were given was supposed to make us wonder what was going on. Which, granted, it did. But I think there was just too much of it in the beginning. (I wondered for a moment if this was, like, a paranormal romance. Legit thought Fox was about to be some sort of were-creature or something. That's how confused I was.)

It's not paranormal or supernatural though. Just FYI. (I saw on of the tags say that it was paranormal, but I can find no elements of supernatural, witchcraft, or anything like that in this book.) It's just a quirky town, with quirky people. There is a mystery. That part is true. But no ghosts or goblins or anything.

I like our heroine. She's a happy person who has a lot of reasons to not be happy. But she perseveres and determines to be kind and joyful in spite of all that. What I didn't like about her was some of the stupid things she did.
Spoiler Walking into an alley to hand a stranger her leftovers. Announcing that she's here, providing her exact location in the house to whatever intruder ended up inside.
I mean... in those moments, I was like, "Girl... use your brain!"

I liked our hero as well. He's a damaged soul who believes himself beyond redemption. He believes he's a danger to society, and if not that, then he simply believes society is not a place he will be accepted any longer. But he cares about Cady, and that's something that forces him back into the world a little bit.

I even like the side-character friends that Cady has. Granted, I do think there was a bit too many cliched comments and such... it was definitely a bit overdone. But I still liked it.

Gonna get specific about things I'm iffy on, so that's in a spoiler below. But to summarize, I had a good time here. Not sure if I want to read the next one when it comes out... we'll just have to wait and see.

SpoilerFor those wanting details about what I wasn't necessarily a fan of, one part is the obvious voyeurism that takes place on Fox's part. He legit ends up watching her 'have fun' with herself while he's hiding outside her house. Granted, he's there trying to protect her. He's not there with the intent of watching her like that, which is why I say I'm iffy on it instead of completely against. He also ends up on the phone with her, and they're talking while she's doing this stuff, and she knows he's listening and he's telling her what to do... she just doesn't know he's watching her a bit. So yeah... iffy.

Also the ending. The entire ten or fifteen percent of the end that we spend in the court trying to figure out if Cady gets to keep her home. I just find it hard to believe that all of that would've been allowed to take place in an official office building of the town. (Fox ends up grabbing a man by the front of his shirt and holds him like that for quite a while. The entire room goes into an uproar multiple times. Once I might've understood, but it happened a few times, and I found it to get a bit more unbelievable as we kept going through it.)

Still the ending... and this isn't really a problem, it's just something I would've wanted different. But basically, Fox does come back and move in with her. But it's because she had literally already started remodeling the house so he could be in it and not feel trapped. (Our poor man has a serious problem being in any enclosed space. Not just tight ones. Any space that doesn't have a lot of immediate access to see the outdoors.) And there's nothing wrong with this, except that I really would've preferred it if Fox had more decided to stay because Cady meant so much to him. Like, let them formulate a plan together about how they could make this work, rather than Cady spending a month by herself redesigning her entire house in the 'hopes' that Fox will indeed come back because he has feelings for her.

Anyway. Those were some of my iffy or unhappy points. Do with them what you will. I still had fun here. Don't regret the read. But I can definitely see how this book can easily be someone's favorite, and also someone's least favorite book, simply based on what matters to you more in certain areas in the fiction you're reading.

Curious if I reread this one. It’s possible to become 5/5.
