90/100 (2018 Reading Challenge)
It’s not the best translated (okay I don’t have the original Japanese texts, but in the sense of how it reads) or formatted in the sense of it’s kindle edition but it was free. I do have a fondness for fairy stories/fables too as they can be an interesting piece of cultural literary history. They can often be quite harsh too, which often amuses me. I like getting to read ones like this from Japan that are different to the ones I grew up with too & get to hear the ones I would have heard if I was growing up as a kid in Japan. Though it’s hardly a can’t put down read did keep coming back & reading one every so often. Though they are the kind of tales which call out for a lovely illustrated edition.

I'm not a renowned expert on Japanese folklore and mythology, but I have read a fair bit and took a course on it in college, so from my perspective, I'll say that this is quite a nice and accurate collection. I had been listening to the different fairy tale books by Joseph Jacobs, and for some reason thought that this was one of his. To find it was written by an actual Japanese person was a relief, and having it come from his perspective I think does help the book's credibility.
Now, any parents looking to teach their children about Japanese folk tales, be aware, they're a bit more grim and crude. Not shockingly so for most people, but the more uptight will balk at stories of infidelity and toilet humor. Kids might not get the former, but they'll love the latter!
A really good pick if you want to either expand your child's bedtime repertoire, or if you're just wanting to learn a bit more about Japan. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for a physical version of this!

Its finny how fairy tales the world over have such come themes.
Good and evil, fantastic magic, etc.
Good read, easy to get through becuase you can read it in short clips. Veru insightful to the culture I think.

I found these to be interesting. The transmission of what is important in a culture coming down through the fairy tales we tell our children is so visible. Then again, I was looking for it, so maybe that's why. The stories themselves were enjoyable and the narrator did a fine job.
