I've been wanting to read this book for a long time but never seemed to have gotten the time to. I'm glad I finally got the time now. I actually knew two of these stories. Some of my family lived in Japan for a time and they brought back books for my siblings and I. One of them was because my birthday is in it. Either way, they were great stories and I fully recommend them. I loved the morals in most, if not all, of these.

Typos are disappointing; clearly, the editor fell asleep on this one. However, the stories themselves are really interesting. Quite a few of them seem to end rather abruptly, and I can't decide if details were left out because of language barriers or if that's just the way Japanese fairytales go. It makes them jarring, even for short stories (which I dislike to begin with, because I always want them to last so much longer).

The further in I get, the more difficult it becomes to pay attention. Some of the stories are cool and some of them seem kind of pointless. Maybe I should just stop trying to convince myself that I like short stories. It might just be the awful editing. My favorite was when they substituted "poop" for "poor". It's probably somewhere between two and three stars for me, but because only one or two of the tales really stuck with me (in a good way), I think it's closer to an overall 2. A pity, because I like fairytales generally, just think the bad editing really ruined this one.

Too graphic for my taste. They should say this is the prequel to Grimms. Yikes!

eerie fairy tailes for the Westerner

These fairy tales are so much different both in storytelling and in thinking for someone from the West! It is fascinating, so highly recommended, just practice an open mind!

Quite interesting read. To me they are more myths than fairy tales though.

It was interesting to see how some ideas/tropes that you find in western myths/tales are found also in these ones (though that might be due to the choice of stories), like the pattern of "good guy does one thing and gets good things in return, jealous bad guys tries same thing and gets bad things in return", or the "supernatural children found in plants or vegetables".

I'd definitely read more !

I didn't enjoy it as much as I was hoping to enjoy, probably because I'm too old for fairy tails lol. Some of the stories were nice and almost all of them contained some or the other moral at the end (nice to read but difficult to practice). One of my complaints is the depiction of women in the stories (meek and submissive and how they're supposed to be good daughters).
I'd suggest this book if you're looking for a casual read.

Like most collections of short stories, there's a wide range here. Some I loved, some I enjoyed, some reminded me of more familiar/European stories, some were totally new and different and a few I found very disturbing and would like to never read again. Overall, and enjoyable reading experience, and I would read this collection again, just skipping over a few this time.
