Favorite quotes:

1) “But because we were so innocent and we didn’t even know it. There’s no way of getting it back. The confidence. The easy laughter. The sensation of having left home only for a little while. Of having a home to return to.

We were innocent enough to think that our lives were what we thought they were, that if we pieced all of the facts about ourselves together they’d form an image that made sense—that looked like us when we looked in the mirror, that looked like our living rooms and our kitchens and the people who raised us—instead of revealing all the things we didn’t know. “

2) “Because if we have any sense of self preservation, we do the best with what we’re given.”

This story is a reflection of grief and the impacts of our actions, or non actions, on the ones around us. It is gut wrenching as it explores Marin’s life both before and after she left San Francisco to New York. The symbolism of the shells and ocean are mixed with the solid of snow and New York (a bustling city which, at its core, can be quite hollow). The relationship between Marin and Mabel left an ache in my chest and, although it appears that they will move forward together in a different capacity, it still broke my heart, the last chapter of the book. The ending was so beautiful, I kept repeating to myself that something good better happen because it’s just so heartbreakingly awful what Marin went through and, although it wasn’t the fairytale happily ever after it was a realistic portrayal of familial love. I will have to reread this in the future

This book is probably one of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given. This was written so poetically and beautifully that I found myself tabbing so many of the pages and highlighting *so* many lines. I think it captures mental illness, grief, first love (and loss of it) so perfectly in just over 200 pages. The relationship between the Marin and Mabel is complex and heartbreaking. Every character, from Marin to the woman who works in the pottery shop is distinct and jumps off the page. I also really loved the literary references that were peppered throughout the narrative. Everything about this, from the writing to the relationships to the sapphic and mental health representation makes this a modern classic in my eyes.

A short but impactful read. Every inch of the book was filled with emotion. Even when the main character was try to avoid her emotions. Definitely not a book to read if your looking something like hearted or going through a really tough time. Unless your the type of person that needs to read something sad to feel better. Over all really good book i definitely would recommend it.

wow. just, wow.

this book hit so close to home, as someone who also lost a grandparent they were close to, though to different circumstances.
i know the love marin has for her gramps, how deeply it goes & the crater that was left when he was gone & reading this book i felt all those emotions again.

a beautifully written book, there's so many lines that are going to stick with me forever.

i wish that each time i re-read this book, whenever i'm ready for it, that it's like i'm reading it for the first time.

I loved how quiet and devastating this novel was. I loved how it surprised me with its simplicity, the sucker punch of emotion and how gently yet viscerally grief is explored. I cried a few times while reading this, mostly because I wished I could go into the page and hug Marin. Her pain is both foreign and familiar to me, but I am glad I read this novel now after silently admiring LaCour's work for years but never daring to read one of her works for fear that it would hit too close to home. To be fair, it did hit close to home, but I made it through.
