“You have a heavy heart, for someone with everything.” —Madeleine Wallace, page 98

as a story, this was . . . fine. lu is definitely comfortable in her prose and her ability to weave a narrative. she’s part of the reason i’m not giving this a one-star rating tbh. the thing is, this is barely a batman story because bruce wayne has been watered down enough to feel like he’s just some grown-up, rich, ipad kid with a predilection for morally questionable women. gotham doesn’t even feel like gotham! it’s just like every other major city. like i get that this is pre-batman which means no rogues gallery, but there is a pulse to gotham that i think lu never managed to capture right (e.g. nolanverse gotham just being a punched up version of chicago vs. reeves’ gotham which feels as dirty, slimy, and yet still oddly beautiful as it’s depicted in the comics). and to me, if you can’t get gotham right, you’ll never get bruce right. this can’t even be construed as fic because i have definitely read better AUs than this. literally today, even. there are nods to future batman iconography, but it rings hollow when the bruce wayne portrayed isn’t the bruce wayne, yk. anyway, tldr: if you know nothing about batman, this will be a fun, quick read for you; if you’re agonized and tormented by brainrot over batman in the way i am . . . my sincerest condolences fr

Um...?

Rating aku sebenernya 4.5. Likewise, goodreads did not allow us to givr half star ugh!

Stunning art, but the plot isn’t compelling or unique :/ I’ve never been a huge Batman fan, but I gave Nightwalker the benefit of the doubt

I haven’t hated a book this much in a long time. The writing was extremely basic and the plot was incredibly dull. More annoying than that every single character was as uninteresting and flatly written as a character can be. Dianne and Harvey and random detective lady pretty much lacked any characteristics besides what they said in relation to Bruce. And then there’s the main characters. This is in absolutely no way a Batman story. It’s a book about Bruce Wayne, and even in well written comics Bruce Wayne is not the most interesting character but the interesting villains and well written plot back it up, as well as him being fucking Batman. This book had none of that, and Bruce in this was infuriatingly dumb and rich and lacking common sense and if i met him in real life i would feel a burning desire to push him out of a window. Then there’s the antagonists and the love interest who are one and the same. There’s “The Nightwalkers” an extremely generic bad guy group who are assassinating rich Gothamites and guess who’s a rich guy from Gotham. Madeleine was also extremely boring, her and Bruce had no chemistry and her whole character seemed very clichéd.

Meh. Too short, I think, for the scope of the story she was trying to develop; a fun ride, although I never really cared about any of the characters.

(Also, is it just me, or is it really confusing that his BFF is named Dianne? I could only think of Diana (aka Wonder Woman) every time I read that.)

Some cussing, a couple of semi-detailed kiss scenes, not much else by way of content concerns.

Basically: meh.
2.5 stars.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would, I put of reading it for so long and now don’t know why. I’m excited to read the others in this series and read more from Marie Lu as I really enjoyed her writing.
