adventurous lighthearted fast-paced

Plot was lacking, characters one dimensional, skimmed the last 80 pages. Feels like a story a child made up in a game of pretend.

A cute-ish adventure story about a girl who goes in search of her mother. Unfortunately, it didn't compel me to read beyond the first 60 or so pages.

This is a fun book with a fun writing style: "Lucy's best friend was a boy named Wynston. He happened to be a prince, but it wasn't his fault." Lucy is the madcap daring one (though she turns out to be very caring), and Wynston is the sensible one (who of course goes a little wild at times, mostly to help Lucy). But despite some cliches, they are good, solid characters who get into some crazy scrapes while off on their adventure and rescue on the Scratchy Mountains.

This novel hit on some difficult themes: growing up without a mother, dealing with death, taking responsibility, questioning the rules in the adult world (and only sometime prevailing) - but it does it all in the guise of a fun fantasy novel. I have some quibbles with the resolution at the end as it seems out of place in the lives of children on the cusp of puberty, but I like the book otherwise.

Recommended for grades 4-6.

while very cute this seemed a little bit pointless and incomplete.

I wanted to love this book. The good news is that I wouldn’t hesitate recommending it to any kid. The bad news is that it really didn’t work for me at all - a cute series of stories, for sure, but nothing crazy wonderful like I was hoping. I can see kids absolutely eating this up, but it was strange to read a kids book that wouldn’t appeal to me.

Quite nice. Story flow is a little awkward and the ending is poor. But some good fun overall. Released Aug 26, 2008; First time author

Fun, especially for someone around the ages of 12 or so.

I loved the description of this book - but when I started reading it I could not get into it. I read all the way through - but my heart was not into the story.

It's a debut novel and it shows. I love the relationship between Wynston and Lucy but there are other scenes that feel like they've been written in the style of Tale of Despereaux. Snyder, though, has a much snarkier (and funnier) voice which doesn't come through as loudly and proudly as it does in more recent works.

I would, though, love to revisit these characters when they were older and living as King and Queen in the dairy — with presumably the old palace converted into a barn.
