Looks like a challenge but is a very quick and easy read, following the lives of one big family and just reading about the ups and downs of life

DID NOT FINISH

Unfortunately I have to add this to my DNF shelf. The prologue showed an explosive scene - the one I was looking for, anticipating, from the blurb on the back. I read about 100 pages and it was chaotic. A tonne of characters that was hard to keep track of. Getting impatient, I flipped forward to try and see how much farther until I got to the interesting plot twist (that we all knew was coming) and it was nearly at the very end. As the book is 600+ pages, I just couldn't do it. I couldn't force myself to read through almost an entire book on an enormous amount of characters before I got to the part that intrigued me in the first place.

This was my summer rock. I took it with me everywhere. It has coffee stains, salt water crinkled pages, dog ears, and a very bent spine.

I was excited to read this, but I will admit I had relatively low hopes. I was expecting a Liane Moriarty style ‘mystery’/ family drama that was enjoyable enough to pass the time, but at least 150% longer than it needed to be.

I was pleasantly mistaken.

Grown Ups was an easy read that’s well written with substantial, relatable, and realistic characters. A friend who reviewed this a few months ago made a very good point I’d never considered before - an “easy to read” style of writing is in fact quite difficult to pull off. The words and story flowed off the page, but a lot of meticulous and deliberate work would have gone into making this seem effortless. Especially with so many characters, each of which were well-rounded, with genuine flaws and arcs. I also enjoyed many small tidbits or casual asides that felt so real they hit you in the gut with an OOOOF.

Don’t be turned off by the length - I flew through it and it never felt long for the sake of it.

Enjoy!
