Nothing in this book worked: not the characters or their dynamic (did not give a shit about anyone), not the plot (plot??), not the vibes (dull pretentiousness?), not the writing style, not the artsy side notes; if not the idea itself, then definitely not the execution. Not for me.
Almost DNFed this at every single chapter. I should have saved myself at the start; I can’t get those hours back.

Some online reviews said the second half was better, the last quarter was better, the last few pages were WORTH IT. So I kept reading. LIES, except for the fact that in the last few pages something actually happened. But after 270 pages of boring, meander-y navel gazing that made me want to QUIT and GO TO SLEEP and question whether I EVEN LIKE READING ANYMORE, the ending was way (like laughably) too little/too late.

Not horror but the audiobook was fun nonetheless
A wholly unique experience when it comes to the narrative style and execution of Tremblay's latest release. However, there's a lot of internal dialogue going on (it is presented as a memoir...no, it's a novel...no, it's a memoir!) and not a lot seems to be happening. But because I love Tremblay, I wanted to finish it. There's a few creepy moments and some fantastic LOL one-liners and barbs by the person (who I won't name) marking up the book in red ink.
But ultimately, in the end, it just didn't do it for me.

I read this book primarily because of the gimmick - "handwritten" notes and edits in the margins, added by the "author's" best friend. I didn't love the tone of the main body of the book, it was somewhat pretentious and very affected. BUT. I've never read Paul Tremblay before, and I could easily see the tone of the main writing being purposeful. So I can forgive it! I also wouldn't really consider this a horror book, not exactly. The horror is extremely light from beginning to end. If you're very sensitive, I wouldn't read it, but I almost wanted more horror. The way this book plays with unreliable narration from not one but TWO directions was fascinating and kept me hooked. I hope someday another book like this is written because I would read it in a heartbeat.
