A classic, haunted house, couple of tragic deaths and a couple of twists and turns. But... the style of writing kept me glued to the book and scared a shit out of me.

If The Haunting of Hill House and The Shining had a baby it would be this book. This is one of those books you can’t put down. I absolutely love it! And the twists

Home Before Dark is my 3rd book by Riley Sager. I always find them entertaining, but I never truly enjoy the twists at the end because to me, they feel either too predictable or forced. This one was the same situation.
We follow Maggie, whose family moved to an old Victorian estate in the Vermont woods, Baneberry Hall. Not for long, though, as two weeks after moving in, the family fled the house because it was haunted. Maggie's father, Ewan, later tells the story of the house in a book titled House of Horrors.
Today, Maggie works in interior design and is convinced that all the events told in the book are a lie; ghosts don't really exist, do they? So when her father passes away and she inherits Baneberry Hall, she decides to return to it, to restore it, and hopefully sell it, and to figure out what really happened in those two weeks.
Home Before Dark follows the pattern of one chapter being set in Maggie's POV and the next being chapters from the book Ewan wrote. I really enjoyed this change; both POVs complemented each other perfectly, revealing just enough to create more questions and keep you hooked. And it was a really fun and easy read for the Halloween season.
The issues for me were mainly with the twists at the end, which, to me, can break or make a book's rating. I will probably review the rating and adjust it in the future. Right now, I am unsure whether to rate it 3 or 4 stars.

Another good read for spooky season! Parts of this reminded me of The Haunting of Hill House. Loved all the twists at the end!
