This is everything I want from a post-apocalypse novel. Grouchy hero that respects boundaries. Practical but genuine heroine that asks for what she wants. And genuine day-to-day life, with the fear and the hopes beautifully articulated.

I also enjoyed that Layne and Travis were small-town people, with a lot of insight into their previous lives. Claire Kent did a wonderful job of having Travis both request consent and take control, something that feels vitally important in the world created where women are often mistreated. The epilogue felt hopeful and well-rounded.

The only thing that didn't push this up to 5* for me was that I didn't like the final scuffle, and that the scuffle was required to keep things moving forward. But it was still handled well.

Neither good nor bad - there's something that just didn't quite click for me with this one.

I enjoyed Travis as a male lead and Layne was fine enough, though her age definitely showed. But it quickly spiralled into a sex-obsessed story (not trying to complain - those scenes were really well-written) rather than a dystopian, survival story.

I'd seen Last Light recommended a few times lately so I thought I would give it a chance. I finished it in one sitting, which says more about my inability to stick with bedtimes, than the quality of the book. It's not bad, a solid 3/5. My biggest complaint was the single POV. I never feel as invested in the MMC when we're denied their perspective. At least it wasn't instalove so it's got that going for it. Considering the setting, it's pretty low stress which I appreciated.

All in all, not bad for my first foray into post apocalyptic romance.
