Only a few books in and I think I’m obsessed with this series. Travis and Layne’s relationship growth was so touching to read, even though their lack of forthright communication got grating at times.

To me this is the perfect romance book. Unlikely partners thrown together by extreme circumstances who then navigate what they mean to one another in a new world.

Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

This is everything I want from a post-apocalypse novel. Grouchy hero that respects boundaries. Practical but genuine heroine that asks for what she wants. And genuine day-to-day life, with the fear and the hopes beautifully articulated.

I also enjoyed that Layne and Travis were small-town people, with a lot of insight into their previous lives. Claire Kent did a wonderful job of having Travis both request consent and take control, something that feels vitally important in the world created where women are often mistreated. The epilogue felt hopeful and well-rounded.

The only thing that didn't push this up to 5* for me was that I didn't like the final scuffle, and that the scuffle was required to keep things moving forward. But it was still handled well.
