such a lovely love story honestly couldn't stop reading and the plot was so amazing. i will be reading more post-apocalyptic romances cause I think I found my calling

I would die for the post-apocalyptic romance genre. This was the most perfect story ever. The author didn’t go wrong ANYWHERE. Underrated much?????????????

4 stars rounded up. I keep on dithering on this book. The writing can be lovely, and I love how the author writes the hero and the slow build of his relationship with the heroine, and the post-apocalyptic vibes that ring of The Last of Us are great.
Really, I love the intimacy in this book, and the relationship, but I'm just not sold on the world building. The writing didn't sell it to me either -- I think jumping in five years down the line diluted it, as all we had was what we were told, and then jarring instances of violent misogyny. And I don't buy that either. In an environmental disaster, would society really become a "if you don't have a man you will be abducted and assaulted" as a matter of course? Especially five years after the disaster, without disease further weakening the ranks?
Then again, I stopped watching the Walking Dead after a few seasons because it became misery porn, so it's likely that this is just not my genre

I’m really pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book. I really wasn’t feeling it in the first 10% and I feared I’d have to DNF pretty early on. But I really ended up loving Last Light. This book definitely gave me the vibes of The Last of Us (more so the show than the game imo) and some hints of The Walking Dead but without any of the zombies. The MMC reminded me a less gruff version of Joel from TLOU, and I have a feeling Travis was definitely based off of him.
I enjoyed these two characters a lot, and just seeing their day-to-day life. The monotonous, slice-of-life actions of living through the apocalypse was probably my favorite part of this story. I ended up loving the romance between the MC’s, who were so well fit for each other. The MMC turned out to be so sweet to the heroine, and I ended up loving all their interactions. The steam between these two was also super well written. And surprisingly, I did enjoy the writing style in this book. I was kind of scared I wouldn’t since a lot of the reviews were complaining about the “bad writing”, and I really don’t think Claire Kent’s writing was bad at all. It was very simple and one sentencey, but it worked quite well for the one person POV the author went with.
I think my main and only big complaint with this book which is causing me to knock off half a star, is the miscommunication trope. This does have a little third act miscommunication/break up that just could have been avoided had either the FMC or MMC opened their mouths and just communicated! It was deeply annoying and made me skim (which I hadn’t done at all in the earlier parts of the book). But overall, this was a very beautiful and romantic book. I feel like if you enjoy really deep, emotional romances or post apocalyptic stories, this one will definitely be for you. I’m really excited to try more in this series from Claire Kent!

that’s right! you can have it all even during an apocalypse. a hunky mechanic! a cabin in the woods whose owner you had to bury because they died! the previous owners dog! an epilogue pregnancy! if you don’t think about to hard about dying during childbirth, life is great.

I really enjoyed this post-apocalyptic romance. I usually read more fantasy romance, so I wasn't sure if I would like this but I ended up loving it. It is very heavy on the romance, lots of tension, build-up and plenty of spice scenes that were very well written. I loved the characters as well, FMC was very strong but also relatable, MMC was a great mix of brooding and mysterious, but also sweet and adorable.
