Really interesting "merging" of Japanese and western style -- they are Japanese folk stories but rewritten by a Greek-Irish author for a western audience. Obviously, carrying nineteenth-century western assumptions, but I enjoyed tracing that.

The writing is quite clipped and formulaic, but this actually worked for me, personally.

I was not at all familiar with the author beforehand, so really appreciated the introduction and appendix -- tied the context together really well.

There were some interesting stories and descriptions in the mix, but otherwise the collection felt lackluster. I see others praising the writing style and I honestly disagree—there are some stand-out passages, but for the most part it was very clinical and drab where it should have been fantastical. With the awesome material of the folklore, I was expecting a lot more.
