Not my favorite Olivia book, but oddly enough, it is my daughter's favorite. Not sure if it's all the gelato that gets eaten or what, but this one gets requested every day.

This was one Sawyer's Christmas gifts. He loved it! I loved that he learned about Venice....and gelato.

This sweet little French cartoon always has me in stitches. Despite not heading directly to Venice, this was a perfect small story to read before I went. The illustration combined with the photography is really beautiful. For a giggle as well as a tour of Venice, be sure to give it a read.

This was another cute installment in the Olivia series, though it lacked some of the magic the first few had for me. I loved the families obsession with gelato and Falconer's use of real images throughout the story. And I was laughing out loud after only one page. Yet, the illustrations were too cluttered and didn't have the gorgeous, balanced qualities of earlier books. My biggest complaint was the lack of realism in parts of the story. I love Falconer's series because he just shows how spunky Olivia goes about her day and her humorous takes on ordinary things. This book veered a bit too far from realism and introduced some over-the-top elements that didn't appeal to me. Olivia isn't a fantasy story (aside from her being a talking pig!) so I didn't care for the unbelievable elements.

Another fun (and very destructive) adventure with Olivia.
I have wanderlust now....

poor plot line...no explanation or glossary of the sights. Felt like a forced story with Venice as a backdrop. Missing all the charm of the Olivia stories.

With the exception of Olivia Helps with Christmas, we own every one of Ian Falconer's Olivia books. When I heard he had a new one out, Olivia Goes to Venice, I had to get a copy.

Venice is one of those places I would love to see in person. For the moment, though, it's a place I travel to in books. Olivia now has had a chance to go.

Her family adventure involves pigeons in Piazza San Marco, tons of gelato, and a problematic gondola ride. All of these places are rendered with digitally augmented photographs with the gauche black, white and red paintings of Olivia and her family.

The book ends with Olivia leaving her indelible mark on Venice by taking home the wrong souvenir. I'm glad this book is fiction because otherwise Venice would never be the same.
