I enjoyed this so much more than I thought proving that recs from friends can go right. This was full of moral choices, triggers, and a romance that was unconventional but also something that made the aliens reconsider some old ways. It was a really good book for characters, story, and to make you think.

Out of the 3 books I've read of Sanders' this weekend, this one was the best.

I love the captured alien and caretaker shtick. It's why I adored Heart's Prisoner, among other things. Sanders definitely knows how to make an engaging alien world and evil scientists and a hot alien main character.

Sanders just has a really nice view of the common person. She believes in the power of morality, right and wrong, friendship, loyalty, and doing the right thing, damn the consequences. In real life, obviously inhabiting an alien planet is not on Earth's agenda at the moment, but the actions of the minor characters here were generous and optimistic. Maybe I'm a pessimist at heart, but I have low expectations for people and for disobeying orders from superiors to do "the right thing."

Also, I didnt totally believe in the main characters' relationship and chemistry. It felt a bit forced and gratuitous. It went from "I'm gonna punish you for your role in my imprisonment and taking away my dignity" to "I want her around always, she feels so nice when we cuddle, I want her forever." It didn't scream "well-developed romance" in my opinion. I still enjoyed them and the story despite this.

Was I entertained? Of course. Alien romances are usually so scrumptious.
Would I reread this book? Tbh, probably not. If I'm gonna read a captured alien/caretaker romance, I'm gonna pick up the 5 star read that is Heart's Prisoner.
Would I recommend this book? Yes! It was pretty well done considering.

Happy reading, Goodreads fiends.

I found the first third of the book to be very slow, needlessly complicated and a bit boring. I only continued because I had accidentally bought the audiobook for book 2 during a sale. The story did get better. But the beginning was pretty awful.

Okay, hear me out on this one. This has been popping up on my Kindle ?check this out? recommendations for almost a year and I kept putting it off because the MMC was very alien looking. In a state of having too many TBRs, I asked someone to pick a random book for me to read and this was the one. Got to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was a fairly slow burn of a romance but it?s definitely an awesome world build and a surprisingly sweet HEA. I felt like the FMC was a strong character and I really enjoyed the writing. I was a little confused when the MMC flipped the switch on their relationship, as it seemed to come out of nowhere. But overall a story worth reading. I?d probably fluctuate between a 3.5 - 3.8 for a well written enjoyable story. Can?t put my finger on what exactly keeps this from a higher rating, maybe just personal preferences, but I think it?s worth the read if very different species romances are your thing. I will say that in the beginning, as they are from different cultures, some internal thoughts of the MMC seem pretty controlling, but I promise that?s not the real story with the society.
