Honestamente, no lo he disfrutado nada.

A really fascinating novel. Its narrowness of scope (characterizing WWII Madrid populace) grants the book a groundedness and goal to succeed at. Its candor and coarse prose grants it a universality of significance.
The Hive clearly delineates kinds and types of people and derides them all. Fate and luck, for instance, are common themes on the lips of Cela's Madrid dwellers. But the course of the novel ridicules the opinions of every character on this matter. Most of all, I am staggered by the starkness with which Cela has ennumerated the casual cruelty of the human heart. Each of the horde of the Hive's characters, in their own pitiful way, manage to make Madrid just a little more dingy and humankind slightly more distasteful.
I was reminded of Southern Gothic writers by some features of Cela's style. For instance, the majority of the prose were sterile, documentary, and straightforward, but some moments became eerily cosmic and poetic. The impression of the whole novel is quite effective and most moments serve the whole rather than make themselves memorable. However, a few of the vignettes left a magnificent impact, tearing free from the boundaries of the novel as a whole to stand in their own spotlight.
Overrall, I highly recommend this unusual book. It was much easier to read than I was expecting and portrays a moment of civilization largely ignored by modern Americans. Beyond this, it was refreshingly sassy and will have you grinning at its cynical genius.
