The satire in this short story was so fascinating; the idea of commemorating one’s family’s past and heritage was so nuanced and interesting and the conflict created between Dee and her mother and Maggie was fascinating to observe. I thought some of the more satirical comments and touches were good but sometimes felt a bit random and unnecessarily insensitive at points.

it just wasn't for me. I did like her intention and themes of the story, but I'm just not a fan of Alice walker's writing style.

Reading this short story was (oh wonder!) very interesting.

I found the incredible harmony between the two most opposing sides of society quite engaging to read. On one hand we have this incredible, handy woman, who thinks and does things practically and out of necessity. She wakes up, and chooses to live life the way she had been taught by her mother, her grandmother and even her great grandmother - day by day, forging her own instruments by hand. A traditional, off-set lifestyle common for her generation and her background.

On the other hand you have this very modern woman, riding along and suddenly making a big fuss about something that should've been thought of as natural. She acts as if these practical ways aren't meant to be practiced but displayed. Made available to appreciate and gaze upon, withstanding to touch or even use it.

I don't want to say too much, but it was definitely worth its time and I'm excited to further discuss this soon.

Such an interesting short story. Great ideas of heritage, family and appropriation presented throughout. I want to visit Maggie and Mama and sit in their yard with them!!!
