really loved this trilogy, especially since I went in knowing nothing!
Trigger warnings for everyone, but this remains my favorite dark fantasy to date. It stands up as adult fiction (I can't believe I read some of it when I was 12!) with brilliant characters and truely involved world-building.

Excellent. Edward has nothing on Daemon Sadi. Read first book in trilogy in one day. Couldn't put it down.
Interesting trilogy, very deliberately dark and different for fantasy.
This book is equal parts dark fantasy and trashy romance. When I fist started reading it I was a little putt off by the cheezy names but as the book progressed and rats ate peoples balls off I got over it. I really enjoyed the story. When I run out of reading material I will probably re-read it.
I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars...but I was so convinced by that "game" at the very end that I had to push it to 5. So many other moments like that just make you sick with the pain the characters suffer, and that is good writing. Some of the romantic relationships (not the Daemon/Jaenelle central one, but many of the others) feel a little lacking in feelng; they happen fast and off screen, so it's not so surprising. That and some slow pacing are my only complaints. Otherwise, I thought this was an engrossing fantasy series, just dark and painful enough to keep one guessing.
I'm really not sure how to rate this trilogy. There were so many things that I loved about these books (that ending!), but they are deeply problematic and really have not aged well.
Massive TW for: rape, child abuse, incest, murder.
The ideas, power structure, and fantasy world Bishop built were interesting and fresh. I enjoyed her writing and am looking forward to reading her Others series.
