I picked up this series after becoming very impressed with Bishop's The Others series, which I can't gush enough about. The Black Jewels trilogy is a much earlier work, so I was a bit hesitant. Even though I'm not a fan of dark fantasy, this plot was very intricately woven. Unpredictability is always a page-turner in my book, but that was not reached until at least half-way into the second book, though.

This trilogy is my guiltiest pleasure. I debated even logging it. Insert every content warning.
Technical rating: 3.75 stars... Personal rating 5 stars.
As violent and problematic as a majority of the content is in this trilogy, (and as much as my liking of it may come from nostalgia since I read it as a teenager) I absolutely adore these characters. I've laughed out loud at their antics and banter. And I've revelled in some of the violence. Again, guilty pleasure. 😅💀

What an imaginative and wonderfully detailed world Bishop has created in this awesome trilogy! One of the best fantasy stories I've read in a while. Dreams, imagination, magic, political ambitions, war, terror and acceptance all define the shape of the story but, at its core, is love: familial love, friendship love and romantic love. My only complaint about this story are the gaping holes left by the too-easily thwarted "evil" plans concocted by the story's villians. I felt the story would have been much stronger if those details were better fleshed out for the reader. Unfortunately, "Dreams Made Flesh" does not fill in those gaps adequately. Otherwise, a compelling and addictive read.
There is sex, there is blood, there is violence.
When I first got this book (it was a gift), I looked at it with a little reluctance (mostly for it's massive size seeing as it was 3-in-1), but it came from a friend who's reading habits I trust and mostly share, and so I started reading.
I don't regret it one bit. Although between the first and second book I put it down for about a month, the rest of the time I was glued to the pages, wanting to know just what would happen next.
I thought at first it wouldn't quite be my cup of tea, but I was left wanting to read more of [author: Anne Bishop]'s works as soon as I was done reading.
There were some things in between that didn't sound too... concise; however, I loved the story and characters nonetheless, the whole hierarchy and concept was very interesting.
If you like fantasy, and you are okay with the three stated above, I'd say chances are you'll like this one.

It makes sense that Sarah J Maas gave this 5 stars, it explains a lot.
The first book was good and drew me in, the second was frustrating to read, and the end of the third was what I wish there had been more of.

The world-building was phenomenal; one of the best crafted fantasy worlds I have ever read. My only problem with the trilogy was the pacing; sometimes it crawled and other times it went so fast I found it hard to keep up.
I'm currently in love with Anne Bishop after reading The Black Jewels Trilogy, I have to get my hands on more of her books.
I devoured this as one book rather than a trilogy. A friend bought me the tome for Christmas with absolute confidence I'd love it. I dismissed it, because I hadn't really read much "fantasy". Sometime months later I picked it up out of obligation and it had me from the first page.
