Man, does this break your heart in more ways than one. I think Leila Mottley is so good at handling all of these different emotions throughout the book- anger, disappointment, fear, love, etc. There's a good balance in the ways we read these characters in that they feel so human. There's selfishness mixed in with trying to survive, and it seems there's no easy way to fix everything because your humanity gets in the way- whether that's because you react angrily or say the wrong thing during a tense moment. I really look forward to what else Leila Mottley comes out with next.

She is definitely a great writer, and there are some very important and relevant themes in this book. However, a little too wordy and prose-y for my personal taste, but I can definitely respect that she has a lot of talent with words.

The author's style and voice for Ki is beautiful, I loved the way the words flowed throughout the book. Ki felt so fully real and special, you ached for her every moment. A tough read with a gutting ending, but it was meant to mirror reality and that's even more upsetting. But there are threads of love, joy, and making those with what you have. I only wanted the best for her.
