This book is a slog through an unimaginative fantasy with bland, uninteresting characters. Apparently, the version I have wasn't properly proof-read either as many sentences had spelling and punctuation mistakes.
I read it for a book club where we meet once a month and at the end of the month I was only at 40% and glad to be rid of this book.

The writing is so beautiful and I enjoyed how whimsical and dark it is. The descriptions in this novel are amazing, I could see everything in my mind so clearly. It has a perfect balance of dark and terrifying, and hopeful and dreamlike and I found the plot enjoyable. However, there are racial slurs in this novel. The author is gay but there is also graphic homophobia. These things are done by villains in the novel but still extremely uncomfortable and in my opinion unnecessary. Sex and genitals are talked about a lot in this novel. The main female character is an interesting and well flushed out figure in the novel but I don’t always love his descriptions of women. It’s not super egregious but, again, there is a lot of focus on sex. It definitely took a while for me to really get into this book and care about the characters. I mostly enjoyed the whole thing but the action and character growth seems to be mostly at the end. The main reason I won’t rate this book higher is because of the problematic language and themes it sometimes has.

It’s my second time attempting to read this, and while I did make it further than my previous stopping point, I have to put it down again. The book’s lore is very intriguing, but I never found myself fully immersed in the story.
