A rich complex magical story. Well written and sometimes confusing. Horrors, death, magic, love, friends… all there. Likable and hate-able characters, loss… a long story and worth a read.

Beautiful prose but so many times during the book, I found myself hoping it was almost over.

I had to abandon this one. The writing was ok but I found the story generally uninteresting. Also, i found all the breasts and genitals references out of place and mostly ridiculous. I liked some dinamics between the characters but they were destroyed mid-book: I had no reason to finish it. The ghosts were extremely cool tho.

DNF'd at 46%. Might try again some day, but this just wasn't jiving with me unfortunately. As I didn't make it to the 50% mark, no rating from me - I don't think I have the right to judge it.

The story arc grew on my by the end, however there is a lot of offensive racial language in this book that has really not aged well. I want to destroy my copy rather than perpetuate some of the language within by passing this along

Definitely not as straight up horror as most of Barker's work - at least as far as I've been told. It's more of a fantasy adventure with some real dark moments. Long, sprawling, and crazy imaginative, it's definitely a fun read. Not recommended for all ages, though, because, you know, Clive Barker.
