Didn't hold my attention, but that's a me problem. I get bored with battles and military strategy and stuff. Was hoping for a different approach to history telling, I guess.

I couldn’t get fully vested in the story.

There wasn't a problem with the book at all, in fact it was written quite nicely and I enjoyed what I read. Non-fiction books are just so hard for me to read and I struggled even with the audiobook version and paperback. I will probably read it eventually just not anytime soon.

Phew, a lot of this went over my head but the parts I grasped were super interesting. Chapters 8-12 and the epilogue in particular that covered more of day to day life for average people and less political machinations were extra compelling.
