The ending was just a little bit to convenient, but that's sometimes the case with these. (Though I'd rather read things that slant conveniently good than the alternative.)

A Christmas story about Cadfael. What could be better? Bennet is the name of a young man who comes to offer service at the Abbey but he has a secret. And when an unpopular priest dies, secrets become important.

This seemed a longer Cadfael book than others, but ulitmately has less happening.
A new Parish priest replaces one who died naturally. Where the old one was happy to absolve everyone and accept them as people, the new one is full of fire and brimstone, seeing them all as sinners.
After his actions lead to him being generally disliked, there are plenty of suspects when he is found dead in a stream.

The usual false trails, multiple suspects, discovered evidence give Cadfael and Hugh Beringar a chase as they try to find out what happened, and is there a murderer out there?

This is one of my favorite Cadfael mysteries. Ellis Peters really digs into morality and human frailty and the need for compassion in leaders. Sometimes her novels tie everything up in a neat bow at the end, a little too tidily for reality. But this one leaves a few questions that readers will have to decide for themselves. She always focuses on 'true justice', which doesn't always follow the letter of the law. It's a quick read with great storytelling and insights.
