I received an ARC from the author. All opinions are entirely my own.

I really enjoyed this installment (the end of the current arc) with Dixon and Yuri. I felt like it really distilled their characters so clearly into the essence of their personalities. Dixon has always been talkative and a mile a minute, but there’s one part where Yuri marvels at the sheer number of ideas Dixon can produce in such a short amount of time (and of course one includes a wolverine), and it really became clear how that was such a foreign thing to him, yet something he admires in Dixon (how long is that sentence). Yuri is such an observer — he has clearly determined the inner workings of the Penn family, which are often completely off-the-wall, and he accepts them. Their effect on him still surprises him as he realizes that he genuinely cares about them, something he’s not used to.

Yuri is the only person I can imagine Dixon being with. He is like a golden retriever puppy bouncing around an adult bulldog. Watching him think it’s sexy to follow Yuri’s curt hand gestures when they are in the middle of a dire situation is just so funny.

I love that they found the cedar board from Yuri’s old cabin (I hope I’m remembering that right). Yuri has gone from being an outsider in Pinyin Bay to having it be someplace he truly considers home and worth protecting.

This has been a somewhat Yuri centered review, I realize. It’s not as if Dixon hasn’t grown, but a lot of the observations above that growth seem to come from Yuri’s perspective — he notices how Dixon has grown more confident (Dixon is aware that he is a very good scrivener) and skilled. I also just really like Yuri (I like both of them)—the changes he has gone through are really quite huge—he’s much more trusting than he used to be, at least with the Penns. When it comes to protecting the Penns, that’s another thing.

I hope that Yuri and Dixon return at some point, because I have enjoyed reading about their exploits and the laugh out loud fun the novellas have given me.

It is the end of whats going on in Pinyin Bay, as Yuri and Dixon finally find out who is behind all the diggers and explosions.
I did find this one a little flat after the others, though some nice arcs such as Vano.
Found the reasons behind it all a bif daft, but then the whole series is nicely daft too!

First, this must be read after reading book 6, otherwise it will make no sense at all.

That said... wow! I loved it. We have magical loopholes, missed spells, a travelling geologist, conspiracy theories and nail guns. And, if you feel that all those aren't enough, we have Dixon and Yuri in all their adorableness :P

We finally get to know what's going on with Pinyin Bay and the explosions, what it's behind the fracking and, as it's usual in this series, we have lots of fun :P

There is something profoundly endearing about these two that makes me happy just reading about them. Maybe is Dixon wide-eye approach to life melting Yuri's hardened attitude and cynicism but I love them and I really hope I'll get to see them again soon :D
