I enjoyed this a lot, but as an adult reading it there were a few things I would nitpick.
1. The father/Preacher and mother of the Dewberry boys both reinforce the idea that being mean to someone is a way to show you want to be friends. Opal is forming a lot of positive relationships in her town, even if the age-appropriateness is questionable. The Dewberry boys did not need to be defended.
2. Gone with the Wind being read aloud to a character described as having dark brown skin irked me, even if it was a friendly/innocent interaction.

Spring read aloud for 7 and 9 year olds. We had some amazing conversations throughout this book. I was thankful for the use of particular language around disabilities, mental health, death, identity, police brutality and even witches! We won’t forget Winn-Dixie.

This book, unlike most books, felt good all the way through. It is sad, but sweet, like a Littmus Lozenge, and Just like life. For dog lovers, and kid-lovers, and life-lovers. A quick read for adults who need to learn value without expectation, and for lonely children who haven't begun to understand the world and all the goodbyes they may face.
