Maybe it's because I haven't watched Star Trek in awhile, but this book didn't hit me the way I was expecting it to. I thought it would be a home run- my favorite TOG character has a secret son he can spend time getting to know and teaching, all while basing the story off a well-known episode, with tons of McCoy to boot? Sign me up! For whatever reason, it fell flat for me. The story dragged, even though it was only just shy of 200 pages. Spock treated his son with contempt for much of the story, which really didn't make for a decent reading experience. McCoy was more of a father to Zar than Spock was, honestly. I suppose it was mostly in character for him, since it was a sudden shock and he had to be thrust into parenthood, after having to collect Zar through a time-gate near a destroyed planet. I guess I was just expecting more from the story. It would have been better had they shown Zar more of the galaxy, including Earth and Vulcan, and he got to go to the academy or helped on the bridge of the Enterprise or something. As it was, it was serviceable, but forgettable. I'd highly recommend watching the TOS episode "All Our Yesterdays" before reading this book, or you'll be lost.

This book was written really early on...so the shortness of the book and the style of writing is indicative to that time's desires...for stories in the Star Trek franchise.

I liked the story, overall. It harkens back to the episode, All Our Yesterdays (S3:E23). I always like how this franchise places their stories in (mostly) already framed times, so that the reader can have a visual thing to think about...so that while reading it has a foundation. This story worked because of that previous knowledge of what the Guardian of Forever, was and what it was capable of doing in the most beloved Star Trek: TOS episode called City of the Edge of Forever (S1:28).

The author used these two episodes to prop up her story that she wrote...and took us on a new adventure. About two thirds through...I wasn't as hooked as I hoped I would have been, but by the end...I got emotional.

The relationship in All Our Yesterdays with Zarabeth (played by Elizabeth Hartley) produced a son...that Spock hadn't realized...until he saw a painting from the planets long lost history...of a young child...that look incredibly like him (then he knew who he was and how he was).

The character of Zar was (in some ways) too adaptable for my tastes. He was a quarter Vulcan, but he seemed to be a little too good...so how the story ends (for me) was perfectly done. It had to happen. AND, it happens in a purely Star Trek fashion, too.

If you haven't read this book, please give it a go. It isn't perfect, but the author hits on the emotional beats, that is for sure.

Stardate 6324.09. The result of Spock on 5000 year ago Sarpeidon has been discovered. Using the Guardian of Forever can they retrieve Zar, and with what result. Especially with the Romulans in the area.
Excellent Star Trek story. Another enjoyable re-read.

I really loved this book, probably far out of proportion to its goodness.
