An easy read that didn't feel like anything revolutionary but was very enjoyable and I can see the roots of a lot of other romantasy.

Average at best. It was okay, definitely dragged out the storyline which could've easily been condensed. Overhyped for sure, writing style is aimed towards teenagers or young adults.

I have been wanting to read this book for a while because it's a beauty and the beast retelling. I was surprised at how much I loved Sarah J Maas's writing. I was completely hooked almost immediately. Though the main character of Feyre was an interesting protagonist, she 100% got on my nerves at significant points during the novel. She is immature, stubborn, and totally fucked up because of her family. She makes decisions that don't make sense to me based on her own experience of trauma. Her behavior, at times, is a classic trauma response. However, that being said I am excited to see what the next novel holds because I see a huge potential for character growth for her. Though she is all of those things she is also caring, smart, clever, creative, and a badass. This book does a good job of starting an exploration of a woman character that acknowledges the complexity of the human condition. Feyre's home life was a point of interest for me because I love to learn about family dynamics. Feyre's sense of loyalty to her family seemed misplaced for me. I couldn't understand the sense of duty she felt to take care of them, simply because of the way they treated her. However, I think her discovery that her sister's were strong women as well towards the end of the novel was awesome. This novel presents strong women in a great and complicated way. I will definitely be picking up the next book and more novels by this author.
