What I would give to have a meal with Guillermo del Toro! This man is incredible. A dark, twisty tale with such fantastic monsters. The scariest monsters are normally humans with hideodorous habits.

This dark and gritty book is beautifully written with a little girl protagonist you are absolutely rooting for in the violent and male-obsessed society that she moved to.

I've seen the film several times, lastly a few years ago, and I don't think anything from the movie was missing from this novelization. It's a quick, fun read, a modern fairytale that adds its own flavour to the dark mix in the form of character and monster backstories, something extra that wasn't the focus of the film. We also get an opportunity to visit the minds of the main characters. The antagonist Capitán Vidal is just as mad and ruthless and there are no justifications for his philosophy, he's pure evil. Coupled with gorgeous illustrations it's a book I can easily recommend to fans of fantasy and del Toro.
