A terrifically gruesome children's book. I would not recommend gifting this book to children who still believe in Santa, fairies or the sort, it would quite literally break their dreams into brittle little pieces and pound them into bloody ashes :)
Which makes this book a great read for 10+ year olds who know a bit about WWII, and who used to like fairytales (or maybe still do)
I for one, liked this book.

One of my favorite movies. This is a great adaptation which retains the fairy tale format. I enjoyed the in between tales that further develop the story beyond what the film could do. Of course, wonderful illustrations. This story is very visually driven.

While I really enjoyed this book, because it was indeed a very exciting anf yet easy read, I do not think that it is actually suited for the targeted age group.

I wanted to read some fantasy, so I picked up this book. At first, I had a hard time getting into it, for some reason. But the second half of the book got better.
It did a good job at combining the fantasy elements and the war that was going on around Ofelia. The illustrations were also really beautiful.
Overall, it was a solid read.

Disclaimer: haven't seen the film.

It's basically Spanish Spirited Away or Narnia. If you like stories like Fran Bow, The Cruel Prince, and macabre fairytales, this will be right up your alley.

Pans Labyrinth takes us on a journey not that dissimilar to the decent of the maze itself. Ofelia and her mother are taken to live in an old mill with Ofelia’s new step father, a war Captain with a penchant for violence. The mill is located in a mysterious forest which seems to beckon the young heroine as soon as she sets foot outside. Armed with a love of fairytales and adventure, Ofelia soon discovers a secret, and is charged with tasks by the faun of the labyrinth. A perilous and gripping tale. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t seen the movie first. But to my delight I found reading this macabre story far exceeded my expectations. All familiarity with the works of Del Torro are sure to be found in the book but married with the excellent writing skills of Funke (Inkheart…). This book pieces together the interconnecting fables which guide young Ofelia through her tasks and the history and tragedy tied to everything around her. It is beautifully sad and a most definite recommend to anyone who enjoys the dark and whimsical works Guillermo Del Torro produces.
