This book is Ah-Maz-Ing!! Review to come!
This review first appeared on my blog: www.tracyebanghart.com
At the beginning, I admit I was a little thrown off by how quickly things happened. By the end of the first chapter, Remy's life has been established one way, has drastically changed, AND she meets Asher. Phew! But I actually LIKED this approach, after I got my bearings, because it really got the story moving.
I *love* the premise of this book, that Remy can heal people but takes their injuries on herself...it gives her such an interesting perspective...a superhero who feels a tremendous amount of pain. She is both tough and vulnerable, and I think Corrine did a fantastic job developing her character. By the end of the book I was fully invested in Remy and sad that I have to wait months until I can visit with her again.
I liked that the paranormal element is simple and straight-forward...Protectors, Healers, got it. The story didn't get bogged down with a ton of mythology...there was just enough explanation to give the rules and the stakes, and then the story ran with it. And it did indeed run! The pacing of this book was fantastic...as I mentioned in my last post, I have a teething baby at home, and I *still* found time to read and enjoy this story because I just had to know what happened. In particular, the last third had me absolutely on the edge of my seat...I was so scared for Remy and desperate to find out what was going on...and if things would be okay for these characters I'd come to love!
Not Your Average Twilight
The romance, at first blush, is a little Twilight-y. But only on the most basic level. In fact, the relationship between Remy and Asher is what I wish Edward and Bella could have had. Remy is a strong, take charge kind of chick, and she doesn't put up with Asher's overprotectiveness. Because she can ACTUALLY TAKE CARE OF HERSELF. That simple fact was such a breath of fresh air for me. I *loved* their interactions and how Remy deals with this new person in her life and the realization that she has feelings for him.
I also loved how Remy interacted with her sister and father...there was such poignancy there. Remy's family situation and the grittiness of her life really added to the emotional punch of the story for me. Confession: I'm not actually a huge fan of paranormal romance, but this book had me completely hooked. I can't WAIT for the second book in the series!!

Interesting premise, well-written but definitely had hints of fan-fiction from other novels. That being said it didn't keep me from enjoying the book. It was definitely action packed and entertaining.

Remy O’Malley heals people through contact, but every injury she cures becomes her own until she has enough energy to heal. While living with an abusive stepfather is not the best, she has stayed so she can protect her mother. After her stepfather goes too far Remy is sent to live with her estranged father. Once there she meets a loving stepmother and caring stepsister. The life that she has never had the chance to experience.
Then she meets Asher Blackwell who was once a protector of Healers. He sacrificed his senses to become immortal where he can get them back by killing a Healer. This story has a hint of the "forbidden love" problem where Protectors and Healers cannot date because they are enemies. Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll be coming for her.
Many people would compare this book to the Twilight series, but you can't. Remmy, unlike Bella has the ability to support herself in hard times. She's the exact opposite of Bella. The book does have some similarities, but they are different books. The writing, in my opinion is pretty good, and I cannot wait until the next book.

I don't know quite how to start out here. This book is quite a lot like Twilight, and I pretty much despise Twilight. Girl moves to new area. Girl meets boy who instantly captivates her. Boy is instantly captivated by girl. Boy and girl become obsessed with each other. Boy wants to kill girl, but overcomes his base desire and loves her instead.
Wow. I feel like I've read this story already.
Remy is a Healer, and through the experiences of her past, has become quite a strong, self-reliant person. The downside is that she takes on the injuries of those she heals. She has her own strengths and isn't always relying on others to take care of her. She's the caregiver. The other downside is that this tendency has made her a bit hard, and unable to accept love from others - including family. She's able to toss that aside pretty quickly though, once Asher decides that he doesn't want to kill her anymore. Yeesh. Way to stay true to yourself, girl. (I'm not advocating for the I-hate-everyone-leave-me-alone mode to stick around forever, but at least make it a little more work, huh?)
Asher is your stereotypical YA guy: ridiculously hot, completely unattainable, taking care of himself, suddenly attracted to new girl but wants to kill her... Again, yeesh.
Here's what I ended up liking: Asher. Yes, I liked the stereotype guy. Why? Because he works to set aside his natural instincts and become a decent human being (albeit an immortal one) who would die to save Remy. He comes pretty close too. I like that he had to work at it. He didn't wake up one morning and decide that he wasn't going to be a jerk anymore. He had to make a lot of effort to
Overall, this really isn't my cup of hot chocolate. It isn't bad, just not really for me. In the end, it's about 2 Eiffel Towers.

I liked that Remy was willing to sacrifice herself for those she loved, but wasn't stupid about it. She didn't go seeking danger. When it found her, she put others first.Overall, this really isn't my cup of hot chocolate. It isn't bad, just not really for me. In the end, it's about 2 Eiffel Towers.
I wanted to like it but something kept holding me back. I didn't feel the connection between Remy and Asher. I didn't understand the mother at all. I liked her Father and her new family. I wish we had seen more of her friends. I dislike when people ditch their friends for new loves. I liked the concept of the story but I don't think the bond or the mortality/immortality issue was really explained well. Plus I didn't understand Lotte's actions at all. They didn't make any sense.
Turns out it has A LOT of Twilight scenes. Characters may be different but the story progressed the same as Twilight with the exception that Remy has a backbone and is Healer and the threat came more from her past than from the Protectors.
I was willing to put aside how similar it was to Twilight at one point cause I liked Remy but as it went on, Remy just started losing points with me left and right.
I just didn't understand how that whole conflict could be had when Dean is just a human and she had been training with Gabe, a freaking Protector, for the past month/s. It just didn't compute. What also didn't make sense to me was the whole conflict with the Protectors now. I mean I get why the fought before and the reasons for the war and what not, but I just don't understand what's the big deal now? I just never perceived them as an actual conflict.
What I also found a bit ridiculous was the way in which they dealt with the other Protectors when they came to visit. All they did was talk to them, told them they searched but nothing and they got back on the plane...Really?! And why the hell did Asher have to go? He had a cold, he was sneezing left and right, how the hell did the Protectors not figure out that Asher was turning mortal?...
There were just too many things in the second half of the book that were too unbelievable. First half I would have given it 4 stars and last half a 1 star.

I wanted to try out some trashy triangle books so I wasn't expecting much but god, getting through the first 20% was one of the most tortuous experiences ever. I don't wanna talk about it.
